Miami Dolphins Top 5 Offseason Needs for 2009: Part II

This is PART II; for PART I, click here.

4. Defensive Back

Safety Y. Bell MUST be re-signed

Safety Y. Bell is Miami's top playmaker in the secondary

SS Yeremiah Bell is a game-changer in the secondary and he MUST be re-signed. CB Andre Goodman showed great strides in Miami's defensive system this year and also deserves to be retained. Fellow CB Will Allen has reached his zenith and would be best suited as a number 2. FS Renaldo Hill provided much needed communication in the secondary this year, helping prevent defensive breakdowns in the passing game that were evident in weeks 1 and 2. Renaldo lacks starting-material talent though, leaving Miami with needs at CB and FS. The Dolphins desperately need to add youth, talent and depth in the secondary as this was the only area that was basically untouched last offseason.

5. Right Tackle (if Vernon Carey leaves)

Vernon Carey and Miami are at the crossroads

Not re-signing Vernon Carey will create another problem this year that Miami can ill afford. The Dolphins should seriously consider using their Franchise Tag on Vernon if they are unable to reach a long term contract. Keeping Carey another year would provideĀ  continuity along the line and allow Miami to address other areas this year. He has been durable and versatile for the Dolphins and should improve now going into his 2nd year back at RT.

Ginn is primed for a career year

Ginn is primed for a breakout year

These are the top 5 positions that are priority #1for Miami. Once these areas are addressed, the Dolphins can look to upgrade by adding more talent at LB, DB and WR if possible. The WR position probably has the biggest difference of opinion amongst Dolphin fans. Ted Ginn has shown promise of being a star in this league. His niche has always been the deep ball, but with Chad Pennington, that does not happen consistently. The times Ginn does get the ball deep, he has had to pull up and slow down for the ball every single time.

Despite this, Ginn still gets a fair amount of double coverage courtesy of safety help over the top. What more do you want in a WR that can draw 2 defenders?

The advantage of playing with Pennington is that Ginn gets to work on his areas of weakness exclusively, such as short to mid-range routes and reading defensive coverages. This will only make Ginn a more complete, dangerous weapon when Chad Henne does comes in. Besides entering his 3rd season, the "breakout" year for most WR's, Ginn for the first time will enter the offseason with stability at the QB position so fans should expect great thing from Ted next year.

Davone Bess was the biggest steal in last year's draft. He has excellent hands, quickness, and game-changing ability. He, along with up and coming Greg Camarillo operate well in the slots. With Ginn commanding safety help, Bess and Camarillo can take advantage of one on one coverage. This means that Miami does not necessarily need a superstar #1 WR. What they do need is a big, physical wideout that is a red-zone threat. Capable of executing fade routes, jump balls and short slants. The wildcard in all this is Brandon London. He has the physical tools and make-up, is young, and has shown flashes of being just that guy. If London bulks up this offseason and continues his development, he just may be the perfect compliment to Ginn and Bess.

Hawaiis Run and Shoot offense has prepared Bess well for the NFL

Hawaii's Run and Shoot offense has prepared Davone well for the NFL

Miami had an excellent draft last year, and if they can address the C, NT, and LB positions while adding some youth in the secondary, the Dolphins will be well on their way to advancing farther than the wildcard round of the playoffs next year.
